Sortie public   Created in 1993 by a group of naturalists the GEPOG is an association "loi 1901" (non-lucrative association) with three main types of activities :

  • Education and awareness about the environment ;
  • Improving knowledge about the birds of French Guiana ;
  • Contribution to their protection.

Education and awareness about the environment in French Guiana

Intervention de Nyls dans une école de Grand SantiThrough activities and competitions in schools, hundreds of children are made aware of the exceptional value of their natural heritage.

The Gepog is also concerned with adults. The association and its voluntary members organize outings, lectures, exhibition, diaporamas, and take part in a number of events (Fête de la science, Semaine du développement durable...). The GEPOG is also associated to the training of trainees at the IUFM and that of primary school teachers.

To promote scientific popularization, we publish posters (on Parrots, the Toco Toucan), leaflets ( on the Aras), a quarterly bulletin reserved to the members (Jacana). .Le livre du GEPOGAnd our great pride is the first general-public work on the birds of French Guiana: 'Portaits d'oiseaux guyanais' of which extracts will be found here and there.

Improving knowledge about the birds of French Guiana

Thanks to its network of observers and the knowledge of its members, the GEPOG carries out or takes part in scientific studies (inventories, study of a species,follow-up of migratory birds...) A data base of all the ornithological observations in French Guiana is kept up-to-date and will lead in the medium-term to an atlas of the birds of French Guiana.

Protection of the birds of French Guiana

Labeled 'protection of nature' the Gepog is a member of several local committees (sites, mines, quaries...). It also takes part in the management of natural reserves as a member of the managerial committees. It can finally sue in trials concerning breaches of the laws on the environment.
